Were you aware that about 20% of the population deals with xerostomia, a condition popularly called “dry mouth?” If you deal with dry mouth, we can help you. Learn a small bit more about dry mouth by reading this post.
There are some potential causes of xerostomia. One cause is a side effect of other medical conditions, like Sjogren’s Syndrome and other diseases that affect the formation of saliva and mucus. Radiation therapies like chemotherapy can also impact the production of the salivary glands, forming dry mouth. Finally, lots of medications also harbor the effect of decreasing saliva development. Dry mouth can be a hard condition to cure because it is often a side effect of other conditions; Dr. Stephen Huber may need to work with your other doctors to combat its effects. Autoimmune disorders and diabetes can also cause xerostomia.
In addition to using a spit stimulant or substitute, there are many things you can do to combat the effects of xerostomia. Brushing your chompers twice per day and flossing once daily should be at the top of your list, and you should also visit our office at least once each six months. Drink lots of water, use chapstick every two to three hours, avoid sticky foods and consider using a humidifier in your home.
